The Early Learning and Care Diploma program prepares learners to create responsive, nurturing early learning experiences for children and families. Grounded in the belief that children and families are capable and knowledgeable, the program emphasizes relationship-based practice and respect for the diverse identities, cultures, and contexts that shape children's lives.

*Attend an information session.
*Experience: Submit proof of completion of 40 hours of experience as an employee or volunteer within the past five years in an early years group program/setting/child care. Experience must be with children five years of age and under. Experience may include up to two settings, with a minimum of 20 hours in each.
You are required to submit a letter from your employer/supervisor verifying:
- your name
- hours of experience, including date range
- name, address, and description of the early years program/setting/child care, age range, and number of children
- signature, name, title, and contact information of the employer/supervisor
*Students are also required to submit proof of a Criminal Record Check.
Indigenous perspectives are woven throughout the program, including connections to land, place, and community. Students reflect on the impacts of colonization and the residential school system while exploring ways early learning environments can support belonging, wellbeing, and reconciliation. Through a sociocultural approach to early childhood education, students develop the knowledge and skills to support infants, toddlers, preschool-aged children, and children with diverse abilities. Graduates are prepared to create caring learning environments and to contribute as leaders and advocates within the early learning and care community. Students who successfully complete the diploma are eligible to apply for Provincial certification as an Early Childhood Educator, with specialization in Infant and Toddler Educator and/or Special Needs Educator through the Early Childhood Provincial Registry.
Through this program, learners develop the knowledge, skills, and reflective practices needed to support young children, families, and communities. Graduates of the Early Learning and Care Diploma will be able to:
Graduates of the Early Learning and Care Diploma are prepared for a range of meaningful roles supporting children and families, including positions in:
Graduates may also choose to continue their studies. Diploma credits may transfer toward a Bachelor of Child and Youth Care at the University of Victoria, Vancouver Island University, University of the Fraser Valley, or Douglas College, or toward a Bachelor of Early Childhood Care and Education at Capilano University.
The Early Learning and Care program is delivered fully at W̱SÁNEĆ College, part of the W̱SÁNEĆ School Board and located in the village of W̱JOȽEȽP on W̱SÁNEĆ territory. Learning takes place in a familiar community setting where relationships are central, and students learn alongside peers in a supportive environment.
This approach allows students to strengthen their knowledge and skills in early learning and care while remaining connected to community, culture, and place as they prepare for meaningful work with children and families.
The Early Learning and Care (ELC) program is offered by Camosun College in partnership with W̱SÁNEĆ College.
Through this partnership, students can access supports and services from both institutions.
